Virginia:

As a bivocational minister, my thought is that it is only appropriate to wear clerical garments when in the role of a minister. In other words, when I'm "on duty" as a minister, serving in that capacity, I'd wear the "uniform" that suits that role (the collar). My other job also requires a uniform and when I'm on duty there, I wear that uniform.

In any case, it sounds like you have your hands full. I agree with Chris.

Hey! Came across this post and Yes, after nine years I am going to start wearing the collar to Hospital and prison visits. As an Army chaplain and wearing a uniform with the cross, I acknowledge that Christians and Non-Christians alike come up and will start conversations about church with me. Obviously your attitude and smile helps and adds to the effect. I have seen the collar work well for my friend in the UMC church. As a non-denominationally endorsed and ordained chaplain with nine years service I understand how this could be important. Whether they call me father, chaplain or pastor it allows me to openly discuss spiritual issue they bring up.
