Are DVR's a God-Given "Way of Escape?"

TiVo1.jpg Inspired by a prior post by Chris (Christopher Robin), I've been wondering about DVR's -- digital video recorders. Should they be considered a gift from God? Here's the scripture passage that got me thinking:

1 Cor. 10:13 (CEV) You are tempted in the same way that everyone else is tempted. But God can be trusted not to let you be tempted too much, and he will show you how to escape from your temptations.

My own observation has been that our culture is becoming increasingly addicted to TV. With the availabilty and affordability of satellite and digital cable services, the plethora of on-screen enticements is overwhelming. And while all this continues to expand, I see more and more people choosing to forego church (and even leadership responsibilities) in order to watch their favorite show or sporting event.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm not some sort of fundamentalist/extremist who thinks TV is "of the Devil." But I do believe that behind "excess" -- in whatever form it is encountered -- is some level of temptation. And that's where DVR's like TiVo come in -- or do they? Digital video recorders offer viewers the unparalleled ability to record their favorite programing for enjoyment later. Used conscientiously, DVR's could help people in being more committed to their community of faith while not having to sacrifice their TV-based desires.

Is this a God-send...especially in our "both-and" world? Or are DVR's merely a band-aid, applied to a much more serious problem?
